School's Open

School’s Open: Drive Carefully Campaign

Used widely by schools and communities across the nation, AAA's annual School's Open—Drive Carefully! program uses colorful graphics and a wide variety of products and publications to alert drivers and pedestrians to be cautious near school zones.

Since AAA began School's Open—Drive Carefully! in 1946, the program has successfully contributed to lowering school-related pedestrian fatalities.

School Safety Patrol

School Safety Patrol

For more than 90 years, AAA has supported the School Safety Patrol Program, which instills students with a sense of responsibility and leadership as each day they protect classmates going to and from school. This support has resulted in the production of a number of products such as the distinctive green Sam Browne belt worn by nearly 500,000 patrols in 50,000 schools. In 1985, the School Safety Patrol Program, the largest safety program in the world, received the Presidential Citation for private sector initiatives.

Distracted Driving Research Education

Distracted Driving Research and Education

About 3,000 people die and 400,000 are injured in the U.S. each year in crashes involving “driver inattention,” or distracted driving, according to NHTSA. AAA is working to reduce distracted driving through efforts such as:

  • Supporting laws that provide an effective and enforceable deterrent to distracted driving behaviors
  • Conducting driver observational research to assist law enforcement
  • Numerous educational campaigns and events that emphasize the dangers of distracted driving
DUI

Driving Under the Influence Programs and Education

Thousands of deaths and injuries occur each year in DUI-related crashes in the US. As drunken driving is one of our member’s major traffic safety concerns, we have invested extensively in efforts such as:

  • Requiring and enforcing use of ignition interlock devices
  • Publicizing laws and penalties against drunk driving
  • Supporting the AAA DUI Justice Link creating free DUI educational materials
